Coates’ mix of historical plot tied into fictional characters, transforms you back into a time and place where the characters emotions and experiences are closely mirrored to those that African Americans are still experiencing in today’s society.
The mystical and fantastical elements Coates interweaves actually seem realistically possible. That God could have sent another “Moses” and how wonderfully different history might have played out had he done so.
